Current Status and Outlook in Japan
Ethanol
Current Status of Ethanol in Japan
Less production of Ethanol in Japan: 350,000Kl/Y
・Government seems to promote Ethanol application.
・ Financial Support for Sugar Cane Production
・ Targeted Mixing Ratio is 10% (now 3%)
・ Preparation of Mixed Fuel Supply network
・ Looking for better technology and possible

Major Discussion on Ethanol in Japan
Availability: Ethanol 1,800,000Kl needed in case E3
with 60,000,000 Kl/Y of gasoline consumption
・Economics: import from Brazil ?
Ethanol price : 50yen/l or higher(2004)

Conclusions (1) Ethanol in Japan
Government seems to promote Ethanol application
mainly because of KP. Target is 500,000Kl in 2010.
Mixing Ratio to gasoline is 3% (then 10%)
Small production in Japan because of almost no
feedstock. Ethanol import from Brazil needed.
Bio-Ethanol local area is planed for realization.
ETBE also being planed.
Governmental plan may have some delay.
Current Status and Outlook in Japan
BDF
Current Status of BDF in Japan
・Production of 2,000Kl from used vegetable oil.
Used BDF 100% with tax exemption.
・Shortage of feedstock for BDF in Japan
・Government is pushing BDF slowly mainly
because of KP. Targeted Mixing Ratio is 5%
・Private sector plans to import BDF to Japan after
producing in Asia with their feedstock.
Major Discussion on BDF in Japan
・Availability: BDF 2,250,000Kl needed in case B5
with 45,000,000 Kl/Y of Diesel consumption.
・Economics: import ? from Asia? BDF or Feed ?
BDF price : 75yen/l or higher(2004)
・Tax: exempt only B100
・Technological:
Usage: Car makers have concerns because of low grade of BDF.
Production: Spot (small sized) production may be needed.

Research on BDF Process
Government's drive for BDF
・Technical Guideline for BDF Car
・Tax Exemption for BDF Portion
・Financial Support for Production
・Targeted Mixing Ratio is 5% (then 10%)
・Financial Support for Research (NEDO)

Tentative Schedule
BDF Marketability in Japan
BDF non-marketable with tax
BDF marketable in some time (year 2000 and after) if tax exempt
Conclusions (2) BDF in Japan
・Government promotes BDF introduction because of
KP but less than Ethanol. Target is B5 in 2010.
・Small production (2,000Kl) in Japan from wasted oil.
Difficult for expansion because of no feedstock.
・BDF(or feedstock) import from Asia needed.
・Private sector plans production abroad and import.
・Technology for small sized BDF plant may need.
・Introduction of BDF will come slowly.
